Dr. Kirk Churukian offers laser skin rejuvenation at his San Jose area practice in order to help patients refresh their complexions. Laser skin resurfacing, such as carbon dioxide laser skin resurfacing and fractional resurfacing with a Fraxel® laser, has a simple goal: to replace damaged skin with new, fresh skin. Techniques for skin resurfacing have made enormous advances, allowing patients to achieve nearly flawless complexions. Additionally, photorejuvenation, or Intense Pulsed Light™ therapy, helps patients achieve smoother, younger looking skin as well.
In carbon dioxide laser skin resurfacing, the laser's powerful beam of light vaporizes the top layers of skin, causing deeper, healthier cells to replace the superficial cells that are vaporized. The heat from the laser stimulates collagen remodeling, making the skin tauter. The primary targets of laser resurfacing include:
When laser resurfacing is performed, patients can typically return to normal activities within 10 days, with redness diminishing within 8 to 10 weeks. Laser resurfacing can restore skin to a healthy state, similar to that of skin that has not experienced sun damage or scarring. With proper sun protection and BOTOX® injections, results can last for years.
Depending on the number of conditions being treated and the severity of the individual problem, a series of five to six treatment sessions may be recommended, scheduled three to four weeks apart. By dividing the full program into several treatments, provides gradual improvement with very low risk of downtime and a very satisfying overall result. If you are interested in C02 laser skin resurfacing, please contact our office for more information.
Fractional resurfacing with a Fraxel® laser treatment will give you carbon dioxide resurfacing-like results without significant downtime. This treatment offers large improvements in skin texture, wrinkles and skin discolorations such as age spots and sun spots.
Fraxel® Laser treatment is performed in the office using only a topical anesthetic. It can be used on all skin color types, on the face, neck, hands, and body. After treatment, redness and swelling may occur for 24-48 hours. Two to five treatments may be needed for best results. If you are interested in this effective new technology, please contact our practice for a consultation.
As most of us age, we begin to see sun damage appearing on our skin. Patients seeking skin rejuvenation are turning to Intense Pulsed Light™ therapy (IPL® therapy), or FotoFacial™. This therapy is an effective way to:
FotoFacial™ treats all these signs of aging simultaneously—improving the skin's overall texture and clarity. In fact, Intense Pulsed Light™ (IPL®) therapy is the only proven treatment to help with the flushing experienced by patients suffering from symptoms of rosacea. Best of all, this revolutionary skin therapy is designed to produce younger, healthier-looking skin with little or no downtime.
Intense Pulsed Light™ therapy uses a broad-spectrum light source, and this laser's energy is applied to the skin and transformed to heat energy. The chromophore in the target tissue—hemoglobin or pigment—responds to the heat and is fragmented and absorbed. This photorejuvenation process is designed to stimulate collagen and reverse aging related to the sun, leaving the skin smooth and soft, with a youthful freshness. The face is the most commonly treated area, but the neck and chest are sites especially popular for women who want to correct pigment irregularities. Treatment to the hands and forearms yields a younger looking and pleasing result as well. For more on photorejuvenation, please contact our office.
During a chemical peel, a caustic solution is used to gradually remove top layers of skin. As the healing process progresses, new healthier-looking skin emerges. The peel may be applied to your entire face or just to certain regions, such as the crow's feet area, around the eyes, or the vertical wrinkles around the mouth.
Peels are conducted in our office with no anesthesia or sedation. You will only feel a tingling or mild stinging sensation when the solution is applied to your face. After the procedure, you will generally be able to wear make-up and you will be able to drive.
The Obagi Blue Peel® is a type of chemical peel done in our office that is designed to significantly improve the appearance and health of your skin. Using a low concentration of the chemical TCA mixed with a special blue base to slow penetration, the Blue Peel® allows your doctor to monitor the appropriate depth to effectively remove the thin surface layers of aged and damaged skin. These dead skin cells are replaced by healthier ones, allowing the skin's own clarity and tightness to resurface. To schedule an Obagi Blue Peel® or another skin rejuvenation treatment, contact our office near San Jose.
As your skin ages, the turnover of the skin cells slows significantly, disrupting the balance between the growth of healthy new skin cells and the sloughing off of old damaged skin cells. With age, collagen and elastin begin to breakdown and cause the skin to lose its elasticity, resulting in sagging, fine lines, and wrinkles. The Obagi Nu-Derm System® targets deep beneath the skin's surface, correcting skin at the cellular level, making your skin visibly healthier. By formulating a dosage and treatment plan that is right for your unique condition, this prescription product reverses damage to the skin over a series of treatments. If you would like to find out more about the Obagi Nu-Derm System®, contact one of our helpful staff members.

Spider veins, also called telangiectasias, are tiny visible vessels within the skin. They develop most commonly on the face and legs. If you have spider veins and varicose veins, your varicose veins should be treated first. Varicose veins differ from spider veins in that they are larger (more than a quarter inch in diameter), are darker in color, and tend to bulge.
The two options for spider vein treatment are sclerotherapy and laser. They may be employed independently or in combination. In general, the best candidates for spider vein treatment are18 years of age or older, not pregnant or breastfeeding, in good mental and physical health, with no active medical conditions (e.g., hepatitis, AIDS, or other blood-borne diseases), and free from circulatory problems, heart conditions, or diabetes.
Sclerotherapy is used to treat spider veins. This therapy involves injecting a treatment through a fine needle into the spider veins themselves, making them disintegrate. Because this technique relies upon fitting a tiny needle into a tiny vein, it is best suited for medium and large spider veins. The procedure is performed in the office and is relatively painless. Depending on the number of spider veins present, several 15 to 30-minute treatments scheduled six weeks or more apart may be required.
Afterward, ace bandages or compression hose are worn for three to 10 days. Sedentary activity may be resumed immediately, but exercise, hot baths, and alcohol should be avoided for two to three days after treatment. 50 percent improvement in spider veins following each sclerotherapy session can be anticipated. Understand that some spider veins may never be successfully treated through sclerotherapy.
Laser treatment of spider veins involves applying a laser head to the skin over the spider veins. The laser energy penetrates the skin, targets the pigment in the spider veins, and causes them to coagulate and shrink. Laser therapy is most effective for small and medium-sized spider veins. (Large spider veins respond poorly to the laser and are best treated with sclerotherapy.) Treatments are associated with mild discomfort that is sometimes compared to a small rubber band snapping against the skin.
Immediately following treatment, spider veins will be darker and more visible. The spider veins typically start to fade two to six weeks after treatment. After each treatment, a 30% to 40% improvement in leg spider veins is typically seen. An average of three treatments is usually required at 90-day intervals. If small, medium, and large spider veins are present, both sclerotherapy and laser therapy may be beneficial. Oftentimes all the veins improve after injecting the larger ones. This may reduce the number of veins that need to be treated by laser and minimize the overall cost of treatment.
You should be aware that both procedures treat only those veins currently visible. It does nothing to permanently alter the venous system or prevent new veins from surfacing in the future. For more information on spider vein treatment, contact our office in Los Gatos today.
When the body is injured, the body produces thick tissue to hold the skin together at the site of the injury. A scar forms for a long period after the healing of the surface skin. The more damage done to the skin and the longer it takes to heal results in a more noticeable scar.
While the majority of people heal normally—producing a scar that fades and becomes almost unnoticeable over time—many suffer from problem scarring, producing hypertrophic or keloid scars, usually as a result of family history, genetics, or other outside factors. These types of scars occur when the wound site over produces collagen in the scar tissue. Hypertrophic scars are hard, raised, red scar (within the wound site) that are very noticeable and take a long time to fade. Keloid scars expand beyond the wound and do not decrease or fade on their own.
Both types of scars can be uncomfortable—physically and psychologically. Besides being able to see the scar, which often makes a person self-conscious, these types of scars can be itchy and irritating, and may feel tight, with restricted flexibility, particularly if they are located on a knee or elbow, for example.
For those who would like the appearance of their scar lessened and are not prone to keloid scar formation, scar revision surgery may help. There are several options that offer promise of reduction, including pressure products and self-adhesive gel sheeting applied to scars. Scars cannot be "removed," only made more visibly favorable in their size and appearance.
In general, the best candidates for scar repair/scar revision are individuals with no history of hypertrophic or keloid scarring, are knowledgeable of the procedure and its limitations, are realistic in their expectations of the surgical outcome, and are in good mental and physical health with no active disease or pre-existing medical conditions. If you have a scar and would like to reduce its visibility, contact our office today for a consultation.
